National Martini Day

National Martini Day celebrates the martini, the classic cocktail traditionally made with gin and vermouth. Vodka versions are also widely recognized, and the drink may be served with an olive or a lemon twist. Observed annually on June 19, the day offers an opportunity to enjoy the martini, explore its variations, and appreciate the craft behind its preparation.

The martini’s exact origin is disputed. Its history is connected to earlier gin-and-vermouth drinks such as the Martinez, while drinks resembling the modern martini appeared under related names in late-19th-century bartending manuals. An 1887 edition of Jerry Thomas’s The Bar Tender’s Guide included a Martinez made with Old Tom gin, vermouth, maraschino, and bitters; later versions gradually became drier and simpler. Stories crediting Martinez, California, San Francisco, or New York have all circulated, but no single invention account has been conclusively established. Barlist’s history of the martini explores this evolution in detail.

The observance itself has no clearly documented founder or official institutional origin. The cocktail’s cultural image grew through bar culture, Prohibition-era history, hotels, literature, and film, including James Bond’s famous preference for a vodka martini “shaken, not stirred.” Today, the martini family includes dry, wet, dirty, Gibson, Vesper, and many modern interpretations.

How to Observe National Martini Day

Celebrate by enjoying a classic gin-and-vermouth martini, trying a vodka version, or comparing different garnishes such as an olive and a lemon twist. You can also learn about the cocktail’s disputed history, watch a James Bond film, or prepare a martini-style nonalcoholic drink. If you drink alcohol, do so responsibly and arrange safe transportation; a nonalcoholic alternative makes the occasion accessible to everyone.
