National Trick or Treat Day extends Halloween’s fun to the last Saturday in October. It invites people to dress up, enjoy trick-or-treating, and take part in spooky parties, neighborhood gatherings, parades, and local festivals before Halloween on October 31.

The Halloween & Costume Association (HCA) founded the observance in 2019. The organization had previously launched a petition to move Halloween’s main festivities to the last Saturday of October. After hearing feedback, the HCA introduced National Trick or Treat Day as an additional celebration rather than changing Halloween’s date. The initiative was presented as a way to create more time for costumes, community activities, and daytime trick-or-treating; contemporary coverage of the initiative also records the debate surrounding the proposed change.

How to Observe National Trick or Treat Day

Celebrate by putting on a costume and going trick-or-treating, or organize a neighborhood party, parade, trunk-or-treat, or local festival. You can also carve pumpkins, decorate Halloween-themed cookies, make caramel apples, share spooky stories, or enjoy a Halloween movie night with family and friends.
