World Biryani Day

World Biryani Day celebrates biryani, the richly seasoned, layered rice dish enjoyed in many regional styles. Biryani is often traced to Persian culinary traditions and is believed to have developed further through Mughal and Indian cooking. As it spread across the Indian subcontinent, local cooks adapted it with different ingredients, spices, rice varieties, and techniques, giving rise to styles such as Hyderabadi, Lucknowi, Kolkata, Sindhi, and Malabar biryani.

The dish’s history is layered, too. Accounts differ on how biryani first reached India, with stories involving Persian influence, Mughal kitchens, Arab traders, and older Indian rice-and-meat dishes. The famous tale connecting biryani to Mumtaz Mahal is regarded as folklore rather than established fact. What is clear is that biryani evolved over time into a dish with many regional expressions.

The October 11 observance has no documented founder or formal establishment record. It is also distinct from a separate Daawat World Biryani Day, introduced by LT Foods in 2022 and held on the first Sunday of July, as described in the company’s account of that observance. On October 11, enjoy biryani’s variety and the culinary histories represented in every fragrant layer. Classic recipes gathered for the occasion include both meat and vegetarian preparations.

How to Observe World Biryani Day

Celebrate by cooking biryani at home, ordering your favorite version, or trying a regional style you have not tasted before. Share a meal with family or friends, and learn about the Persian, Mughal, and regional influences behind the dish. You can also compare different preparations—from Hyderabadi or Lucknowi to Kolkata or Malabar—and discuss which one you like best.
