National Peanut Butter Cookie Day

Peanut butter cookies are celebrated and enjoyed today on National Peanut Butter Cookie Day. The cookies likely originated in the 1910s and gained popularity in the 1920s. George Washington Carver is sometimes credited with their invention, and he at least had a hand in popularizing them. He published a peanut recipe collection in 1916 titled How to Grow the Peanut And 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption, and it included three recipes for peanut butter cookies.

The familiar crisscross pattern on peanut butter cookies may have originated in the early 1930s. A recipe in Mary Morton's "Household Hints" that was syndicated in newspapers in 1932 mentions the crisscross fork technique. The following year, a recipe for "Peanut Butter Balls" in Pillsbury's Balanced Recipes called for pressing the dough with a fork before baking so that the cookies baked evenly and their texture improved. The crisscross pattern, like the peanut butter cookie itself, became iconic, and the cookies are also now a symbol of nostalgia and comfort. Today they are celebrated with National Peanut Butter Cookie Day!
