American Cheese Month celebrates the variety of cheeses made by American cheesemakers and recognizes the farmers, cheesemakers, retailers, cheesemongers, and chefs who bring them to the table. The observance highlights the diversity of American artisan cheeses, including local, small, and family-owned producers. It is about much more than processed cheese: American cheese encompasses a broad range of farmstead, artisan, cooperative, and naturally produced cheeses.
The American Cheese Society began American Cheese Month in October 2011. It was held in October through 2019 before moving to May beginning in 2020 to better support cheese producers and the people who sell their products, according to culture magazine. The Society describes the month as an annual celebration of American artisan cheesemakers and a way to support education and growth across the cheese industry through the American Cheese Month program.
How to Observe American Cheese Month
Celebrate by tasting several American cheeses and comparing their flavors, textures, and styles. Try a variety from a local cheesemaker, farmers market, farm store, or specialty cheese shop, and learn more about the people and farms behind each one. You can also host a cheese tasting, add American cheese to a favorite meal, or share the celebration using the resources and hashtag suggested by the American Cheese Society.
