National Cupcake Lover's Day

Get excited, it's National Cupcake Lover's Day! Baked in aluminum or thin paper cups, and usually in muffin tins, cupcakes are small cakes designed to be eaten by one person. They have the same basic ingredients as regular-sized cakes: butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. The batter may be flavored or have other ingredients stirred in, such as chocolate chips or nuts, and the cupcakes may be filled with ingredients like frosting, pastry cream, and fruit. They are often topped with frosting, icing, and other decorations like fruit and candy.

The earliest record of cupcakes dates to a 1796 recipe in Amelia Simmons' American Cookery, which called for "a light cake to bake in small cups." The earliest use of the word "cupcake" in print dates to 1828, when it appeared in Eliza Leslie's cookbook Seventy-Five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats. In the nineteenth century, cupcakes (or cup cakes) had two definitions. One definition was for a cake whose ingredients were measured with a cup. Another had to do with how the cakes were baked. Before there were muffin tins, the cakes were baked in pottery cups, ramekins, and similar molds, and were named for the cups they were baked in. This is the name that remains today.
