National Churro Day

National Churro Day has been celebrated at least since 2018. That year, Sam's Club offered their double twisted churro for fifty cents instead of the usual dollar. These foot-and-a-half long churros were available at the Sam's Club Café, the deal being for the general public, not just for members. In 2020, restaurant chain El Pollo Loco gave away free churros on that day. In 2023, Walt Disney World, Disney Springs, and Disneyland celebrated by releasing specialty churros that were available on the day and for a limited time afterwards. Kit Kat debuted the Kit Kat Churro nationwide on National Churro Day that year, and the following year, Nesquik debuted their Cinnamon Churro flavor in honor of the day. Taco John's offered a free churro with purchase to their Bigger Better Rewards members in 2024.

Churros are fritters of Spanish and Portuguese origin. The ingredients are flour, salt, butter, sugar, water, and sometimes eggs. Flour batter is piped into hot fat and fried in oil. After being cooled momentarily on a towel, it is rolled in sugar, sometimes with cinnamon. It usually is shaped like a thick stick with ridges, the ridges being made from the tip of the piping bag. The sticks are sometimes curved into shapes. Best eaten warm, churros are sweet and crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside.

Churros are often eaten in the morning, being purchased from street vendors or local coffee bars. They first became popular in Spain, where they were and are still eaten during breakfast (often dipped in coffee) and for a snack (often dipped in hot chocolate). They spread throughout Latin America, where regional variations came about. They are prevalent in countries where there has been a large amount of Spanish and Portuguese immigration. Besides being in Latin American cuisine, they are found in Philippine cuisine, and in France and the Southwestern United States. They are most popular in Mexico, and also popular in Mexican immigrant communities in the United States and Canada. In Mexico and Spain, as well as in Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, they are sold in shops called churrerías, as well as in street stalls. In Mexico and Spain, and elsewhere, they are often served with melted chocolate. In Argentina, they are filled with dulce de leche, a type of caramelized milk and sugar, while in Cuba, they are served with fruit.
