World Plant Milk Day, observed annually on August 22, celebrates plant-based alternatives to dairy milk and encourages people to explore options made from ingredients such as soy, oats, almonds, rice, coconut, cashews, hemp, and flax. Plant-based milks offer a wide range of flavors and can be used in drinks, cereal, cooking, and baking. The Good Food Institute explains that producing plant-based milk generally uses less land and water and creates fewer greenhouse-gas emissions than producing conventional dairy milk.

Robbie Lockie, co-founder of Plant Based News, founded World Plant Milk Day in 2017. In 2018, Plant Based News and ProVeg established it as a collaborative campaign, according to the World Plant Milk Day website. The observance invites people to consider dairy-free choices while celebrating the growing variety of plant milks. Some campaign materials also promote a seven-day dairy-free challenge, giving participants an opportunity to try plant-based alternatives over a longer period.

How to Observe World Plant Milk Day

Celebrate by trying a plant milk you have not tasted before, or use one you enjoy in coffee, cereal, a smoothie, or a homemade dish. Compare varieties such as oat, soy, almond, rice, coconut, cashew, hemp, or flax milk, and check labels if you prefer an unsweetened option. You can also take the seven-day dairy-free challenge and invite a friend to join you.
