National Celiac Awareness Day, observed annually on September 13, encourages people to learn about celiac disease, support those affected, and recognize the importance of diagnosis. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease in which consuming gluten causes the body to attack the small intestine. The Celiac Disease Foundation estimates that it affects about 3 million Americans, 70–80% of whom are undiagnosed. Through research, education, advocacy, and support, the day helps bring greater attention to the experiences of people living with the disease.
September 13 was chosen because it is the birthday of Dr. Samuel Gee, who published the first complete clinical description of celiac disease in 1888 and recognized that its symptoms were related to diet, according to Beyond Celiac. The United States Senate passed a unanimous resolution supporting Celiac Disease Awareness Day in 2005. A 2012 account from Beyond Celiac says the Senate designated the observance again that year and encouraged Americans to become more informed about celiac disease and participate in activities recognizing the day.
