National Candy Month celebrates chocolate, candy, gum, mints, and other confectionery treats, with a special focus on the role they play in summer occasions and shared moments. According to the National Confectioners Association, June is a time to enjoy these treats during activities such as road trips, beach vacations, and other summer adventures.
The National Confectioners Association established the celebration in 1974. It originally took place in January, when the confectionery industry sought to boost sales after the winter holiday season; it later moved to May and then to June, where it has been observed since 1999. SmartBrief describes the 1974 beginning and the move from January to June.
Today, the month offers a chance to appreciate the variety of sweets available, from chocolate and gummies to taffy, lollipops, and hard candy. The NCA has also highlighted popular summer flavors such as watermelon, strawberry, and cherry, and encourages people to include candy in the enjoyable moments of the season.
How to Observe National Candy Month
Celebrate by choosing a favorite candy—or trying one you have never tasted before—and sharing it with friends or family. You can also make candy at home, such as peanut butter fudge, chocolate-covered caramel turtles, salt water taffy, or peanut brittle, then share what you make with others. For a more educational celebration, learn how candy is produced, or enjoy a sweet treat during a summer outing, road trip, beach visit, or camping trip.
