National Take Back the Lunch Break Day

National Take Back the Lunch Break Day encourages workers to step away from their desks and enjoy a real midday break. Observed on the third Friday in June, the day highlights the decline of regular lunch breaks and the effect that rushed or missed meals can have on workplace morale and engagement.

Tork introduced the observance in 2018 after its research found that nearly 90 percent of employees considered the ability to take a lunch break important when accepting a job, while more than half of North American workers reported average lunch breaks of less than 30 minutes. The same research found that workers who took lunch breaks regularly reported higher job satisfaction and engagement. In announcing the initiative, Tork encouraged employees to leave their workstations, get some fresh air, and return feeling energized. Tork’s 2018 announcement introduced the third Friday in June as National Take Back the Lunch Break Day.

How to Observe National Take Back the Lunch Break Day

Celebrate by scheduling a genuine lunch break and stepping away from your desk or workstation. Pack a meal, eat somewhere different, or invite a coworker, friend, or family member to join you. A short walk, fresh air, or conversation can help make the break feel like a break instead of another work task.
