National Pepper Month

National Pepper Month is observed throughout November and celebrates the many varieties, colors, flavors, and heat levels of peppers. From sweet bell peppers to jalapeños, habaneros, and other chiles, peppers can add crunch, color, sweetness, or spice to a wide range of dishes. Bell peppers are technically fruits because they contain seeds, although they are commonly prepared and served as vegetables. They may be eaten raw, roasted, sautéed, stuffed, or used in sauces and other recipes, as noted by N.C. Cooperative Extension.

The month also provides an opportunity to recognize pepper growers. The celebration’s exact creator and creation date are unclear: Holidays Calendar says it was created to support U.S. pepper farmers, while National Day Calendar reports that its research could not identify a creator. One calendar source lists 2009 as the year it was established, but that date is not confirmed by the other accounts.

How to Observe National Pepper Month

Celebrate by trying pepper varieties with different colors and heat levels, then prepare them in several ways throughout November. Make stuffed peppers, roast bell peppers for a salad, or experiment with a pepper-based sauce. You can also follow this stuffed-pepper recipe from N.C. Cooperative Extension or learn more about the farmers who grow the peppers you enjoy.
