National Ice Cream Month

National Ice Cream Month celebrates ice cream throughout the month of July. The observance was designated in the United States by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984, when he proclaimed July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month and also designated July 15 as National Ice Cream Day. The National Archives’ account of the proclamation notes that the resolution originally applied to 1984, while ice cream manufacturers helped continue the celebration in later years.

Ice cream itself has a long and varied history. Early frozen treats were made by combining snow or ice with ingredients such as fruit, honey, milk, or rice, although the exact origins of ice cream remain uncertain. Before refrigeration became common, it was often reserved for wealthy people and special occasions; advances in refrigeration eventually helped make it widely available. Today, July offers a full month to enjoy familiar favorites, explore new flavors, and savor this classic frozen dessert. The Census Bureau describes the month as a way to cool off and enjoy ice cream with friends and family.
