The day highlights their skill, dedication, and importance to restaurants, cafés, diners, bars, and other dining establishments, as described by Dayspedia.

Accounts of the holiday’s origins differ. Dayspedia attributes its creation to British restaurant industry expert Fred Sirieix in 2012, with the first celebration held in 2013. WikiDates, however, credits Gaylord Ward with founding the day. Regardless of its disputed origin, the observance offers an opportunity to show respect and appreciation for waitstaff.
