National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day was founded by Fatty Sundays, a gourmet chocolate-covered pretzel business, "to celebrate the most delicious treat of all time," the sweet and salty treat of chocolate-covered pretzels. There's debate about when and how chocolate covered pretzels came to be. An often-shared story claims that Herr Franz Joseph Leibniz, a baker in Hamburg, Germany, teamed up with his chocolatier neighbor in 1544 to make chocolate-covered pretzels. But the veracity of this story is in question because chocolate only existed in drinking form at the time, with solid chocolate not being invented until the nineteenth century.

What is known is that Johannes van Houten developed a process to separate cocoa solids from cocoa butter in 1828, and that the first commercial hard pretzels date to 1861, being made by Julius Sturgis in Pennsylvania. Chocolate-covered pretzels came along sometime after. There are dark, semi-sweet, milk, and white chocolate covered pretzels. They are made using pretzel twists, rings, and rods. They are sprinkled with toppings, such as nuts, peppermint, and sprinkles. They are mixed with popcorn, used to top cakes and ice cream, and enjoyed in many other ways today, on National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day, and throughout the year.
