National Hamburger Month

National Hamburger Month celebrates the hamburger throughout May. The month invites burger fans to enjoy the familiar combination of patty, bun, and toppings while exploring the many ways it can be prepared.

The hamburger’s history is filled with competing origin stories. What is less disputed is the name’s connection to Hamburg steak, a minced-beef dish associated with Hamburg, Germany. German immigrants brought hamburger steaks to the United States, and by the 1930s, serving them between two buns had become common. Accounts differ on who first created the modern hamburger, with claims connected to places including Connecticut, New York, Texas, and Wisconsin; the precise origins remain uncertain. Hopdoddy’s account of hamburger history discusses several of these claims and notes that May is National Hamburger Month.

How to Observe National Hamburger Month

Celebrate by making hamburgers at home, visiting a favorite burger restaurant, or hosting a cookout. Try a new variety, such as a chicken or veggie burger, or experiment with different toppings and combinations. You can also spend part of the month reading about the hamburger’s disputed history.
