National Veggie Burger Day

National Veggie Burger Day celebrates plant-based burgers in all their forms, from homemade patties to modern meat-free products. The day encourages vegetarians, vegans, and the simply curious to enjoy a veggie burger and consider the positive impact plant-based burgers can have on the planet.

Amy’s Kitchen is credited with creating the holiday, though sources differ on its founding year. Amy’s official history says the company established National Veggie Burger Day on June 5, 2016, while other accounts and the holiday’s metadata identify 2017. In either case, June 5 is the date set aside for a meat-free burger.

Veggie burgers can be made with ingredients such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, grains, tofu, nuts, or mushrooms. They may be cooked at home or enjoyed as ready-made patties, and can be served with a variety of toppings and buns. The holiday’s early promotion invited people to enjoy their favorite veggie patty and celebrate the positive impact of plant-based eating, as reported by chef Sara Moulton in 2017.

How to Observe National Veggie Burger Day

Celebrate by making or ordering a veggie burger on June 5. Try a patty made with beans, grains, mushrooms, or another plant-based ingredient, then customize it with your favorite toppings. You can also invite friends or family to prepare different burger combinations and hold a casual taste test. Share a photo of your creation with #VeggieBurgerDay, a hashtag used in Amy’s Kitchen’s celebration suggestions.
