World Vegan Month is observed throughout November as a time to highlight veganism and explore a lifestyle that avoids animal products, as far as possible and practicable. Veganism can involve more than food, extending to choices about clothing, beauty products, and other goods. People may choose it because of concerns about animal suffering or the environment, among other reasons. According to The Vegan Society, November is also the month in which the organization was founded and the word vegan was coined in 1944.
The first World Vegan Day was created by Louise Wallis, then president of The Vegan Society, on November 1, 1994, to mark the society’s 50th anniversary. The observance was later extended from a day to a week and then to the month-long celebration known today. During November, vegan products, recipes, clothing, and events may receive added attention, giving longtime vegans and curious newcomers opportunities to learn more about plant-based living.
How to Observe World Vegan Month
Celebrate by trying a vegan meal or recipe, or by choosing one or two vegan days during the month if you normally eat animal products. Learn more about veganism and the reasons people adopt it, explore vegan alternatives in food or clothing, or look for local events and activities. For structured guidance, The Vegan Society’s World Vegan Month page mentions its 30-day pledge and VeGuide app.
