National Dairy Month celebrates dairy foods and recognizes the farmers, farm families, and agricultural communities behind them. Observed each June, it highlights products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and ice cream, along with dairy’s role in nutrition and local communities.
The observance began in 1937 as National Milk Month, when a group of chain stores promoted drinking milk and distributing surplus supplies during a seasonal production peak. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the National Dairy Council later helped promote the cause, and the name changed to “Dairy Month.” Other accounts specify that the campaign was renamed National Dairy Month in 1939 to include all dairy products. In 1955, the American Dairy Association assumed national leadership of the promotion.
Today, June offers an opportunity to learn more about dairy farming, appreciate the people who bring dairy foods to consumers, and enjoy the variety of products made from milk. Dairy foods such as milk, yogurt, and cheese provide nutrients including calcium, potassium, and protein, although dietary needs and food choices vary from person to person.
How to Observe National Dairy Month
Celebrate by enjoying a favorite dairy food, trying a new milk-, yogurt-, or cheese-based recipe, or learning more about how dairy reaches the table. Visit a nearby dairy farm, farm stand, or farmers market if one is available, and take time to thank the farmers and workers behind the products. You can also explore a virtual farm tour or share dairy facts with friends and family.
