National Herb Week celebrates herbs and encourages attention to their uses, herb businesses, and the International Herb Association. The International Herb Association established the observance in 1991, scheduling it for the week before Mother’s Day each year, according to the Western Reserve Herb Society.
Herbs can be grown in containers, patio planters, balconies, or garden beds, and many are relatively forgiving plants. They may be used to flavor foods, teas, vinegars, and oils, and can also appear in dyes, personal products, arts, and crafts. Herbs can support pollinators and other wildlife as well; allowing some to flower provides nectar for bees and butterflies, while seed heads can feed birds, as described by the University of Minnesota Extension.
The International Herb Association has selected an Herb of the Year every year since 1995, highlighting plants with notable medicinal, culinary, or decorative qualities. Herb societies and other groups use the program to educate the public about these plants, and the association publishes a book about each selected herb.
How to Observe National Herb Week
Celebrate by growing an herb in a pot, planter, or garden bed. Use herbs to add flavor to food, tea, vinegar, or oil, or explore their use in crafts and other homemade projects. You can also learn about the Herb of the Year and leave some garden herbs in bloom to provide nectar for pollinators.
