Pack Your Lunch Day
Pack Your Lunch Day, observed annually on March 10, encourages people to bring a homemade lunch to work, school, or wherever they are spending the day. It is an opportunity to step away from last-minute takeout, plan a midday meal, and choose the ingredients and portions that go into it. Packing lunch may also help reduce spending on meals bought away from home.
A packed lunch can be as simple as leftovers, a sandwich, salad, fruit, vegetables, yogurt, or another combination that travels well. The day’s origins are unclear: research cited by National Day Calendar was unable to identify its creator or origin, and some accounts note that the observance is unofficial. Its subject, however, has a longer practical history. Industrial workers carried metal pails filled with food during long shifts, and lunch boxes later became associated with licensed characters, including Mickey Mouse in 1935 and Hopalong Cassidy in 1950.
How to Observe Pack Your Lunch Day
Celebrate by packing a lunch for work, school, or an outing. Plan ahead with a shopping list, use leftovers, or prepare a simple sandwich, salad, fruit, and vegetables. Try something new, pack dressing separately to keep salads crisp, or share your lunch-packing ideas with others. For perishable foods, include a cold pack to help keep them chilled until lunchtime.
