Pineapple juice has a long connection to Dole. After James Dole began growing pineapples in Hawaii, he developed a canning technique to preserve the fruit’s flavor and juice for people beyond the islands. Dole Packaged Foods, LLC, later worked with National Day Calendar to create the observance in 2023. The company launched a petition in May of that year, with donations tied to signatures benefiting Feeding America, and the request to establish the holiday was approved for annual celebration on August 17. Pineapple juice can add sweetness and a little acidity to recipes, including cakes, quick breads, frostings, cocktails, and mocktails. In 2024, Dole also promoted “PJ in your PJs” brunch parties as a way for fans to celebrate the day.
