National Sandwich Month celebrates the sandwich’s versatility, convenience, and seemingly endless combinations throughout August. The observance was established in 1952 under the auspices of the American Bakers Association, National Restaurant Association, and Wheat Flour Institute. A 1980 reference described its purpose as calling attention to the “convenience, versatility and nutrition of sandwiches,” while the sponsoring organizations also used the month for sandwich contests and recipe promotion. The Food Timeline’s research notes that these industry-sponsored contests began in 1952, with the first contest winner announced in 1956.
The sandwich itself has much older roots, although its history is not entirely settled. The name is commonly associated with John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, who helped popularize the food in 18th-century England. Food historians note that he likely was not its inventor; filled breads and similar foods were already eaten in parts of the Mediterranean. Over time, sandwiches became fixtures at suppers, teas, picnics, taverns, and inns, and their fillings and forms continued to diversify. Calendar Holidays describes National Sandwich Month as an opportunity to explore new combinations and enjoy favorite classics.
