International Sherry Week, also known as ISW, celebrates the wines of Jerez and encourages people to discover their variety, versatility, and connection with food. The week brings together sherry enthusiasts, wine professionals, restaurants, bars, wine schools, and others through tastings, food pairings, educational events, and online gatherings. According to the event’s official FAQ, events may include sherry tastings, sherry-and-tapas pairings, local menus, language courses, flamenco, and cocktails.

The celebration was created by Certified Sherry Educator Chelsea Anthon in 2014. It followed World Sherry Day, a 2013 initiative that brought people together around sherry and food. Anthon explained that a single day was too short for venues in different places to participate, so the event became a full week—and “International” replaced “World” in the name. The inaugural International Sherry Week took place from June 2–8, 2014, with later editions moving to the first full week of November, apart from 2018, when it began in October.

Sherry’s food-friendly character is central to the week. Tastings and pairings can introduce drinkers to styles such as fino, manzanilla, amontillado, oloroso, palo cortado, and sweet sherry. The campaign also includes virtual tastings and digital resources designed to help people learn more about the wines and enjoy them with food. International Sherry Week is managed globally by Chelsea & Co. under the auspices of the Sherry Wine Council of Jerez.

How to Observe International Sherry Week

Celebrate by trying a sherry you have not tasted before, preferably alongside food, and learning about the different styles of wine from Jerez. Look for a local tasting, sherry-and-tapas pairing, restaurant menu, or virtual event. You can also organize a small tasting for friends, compare food pairings, or explore the educational materials and event listings on the official International Sherry Week website. If you drink, enjoy responsibly.
