International Cabernet Sauvignon Day

International Cabernet Sauvignon Day celebrates Cabernet Sauvignon, the bold red-wine grape often called the “King of Reds.” Observed on the Thursday before Labor Day, the day brings together people who appreciate the grape and the wines made from it.

Cabernet Sauvignon originated in Bordeaux, France, where it emerged in the 17th century from an accidental crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. Its thick skin and resistance to various diseases helped it thrive in the Bordeaux climate, while its deep color, bold tannins, and ability to age gracefully helped earn it international acclaim. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon is cultivated in many wine-producing regions, including France, Italy, the United States, and parts of Latin America. The holiday was first organized in 2009 by Rick Bakas, a marketing specialist and Cabernet Sauvignon enthusiast.
