National Pound Cake Day

National Pound Cake Day celebrates the rich, buttery dessert on March 4. Pound cake traditionally uses equal weights of flour, butter, eggs, and sugar—the “pound” in its name comes from the original recipe calling for one pound of each ingredient. Because that formula produced a very large cake, later versions were often scaled down while keeping the same basic ratio. Modern bakers also add flavors such as vanilla, lemon, almond, or chocolate, and may use leavening agents for a lighter texture.
