World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is a seven-day global campaign held annually from August 1 to 7 to raise awareness about breastfeeding and encourage support for breastfeeding mothers and families. The campaign highlights the importance of supportive homes, healthcare systems, workplaces, and communities, while recognizing that families may face challenges such as misinformation, social stigma, and limited workplace support.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), formed in 1991, organized the first World Breastfeeding Week in 1992. The August dates commemorate the 1990 Innocenti Declaration, a commitment by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. WABA coordinates the campaign with partners, providing themes and materials that local groups, governments, and organizations can use for awareness activities. WABA’s World Breastfeeding Week overview describes the campaign’s history and global purpose.

How to Observe World Breastfeeding Week

Celebrate by learning about breastfeeding and sharing accurate, respectful information. Encourage a breastfeeding parent, offer practical help, or thank a healthcare professional or community advocate who supports breastfeeding families. You can also attend an educational event, join a support group, or speak with an employer or community organization about creating more breastfeeding-friendly spaces. If breastfeeding is part of your family’s plans, seek compassionate guidance suited to your circumstances.
