National Kraut Sandwich Week

National Kraut Sandwich Week celebrates sandwiches piled with sauerkraut during the third full week of October. Sauerkraut is shredded cabbage fermented with lactobacillus bacteria, and it is considered a staple food in Germany. While it pairs well with a classic Reuben, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy it.

The National Kraut Packers Association founded the celebration in 1980. Its timing was intended to coincide with Oktoberfests across the country, making it a fitting occasion for a hearty sandwich served hot. Try sauerkraut with smoked ham and Muenster, add it to a sandwich on an Italian-style roll with bologna, or experiment with an avocado and sauerkraut combination.
