National Panini Month celebrates the hot, grilled sandwich made with bread, fillings, and—often—melted cheese. A panini is commonly prepared with non-sliced bread and pressed until warm and crisp, making it an easy way to turn an everyday sandwich into something special.
The word panini is Italian for “small bread roll,” while panino is the singular form. Although the sandwich can be filled in many ways, popular combinations include meats, cheeses, vegetables, pesto, and other flavorful additions. The modern panini became especially popular in Italy during the 1970s and 1980s, with Milan’s coffee-and-panini bars associated with a youth subculture known as the paninari.
Sargento Foods founded National Panini Month in 2008. According to a 2010 announcement from Sargento Foods, the August celebration encouraged food lovers to change up their usual sandwich routine and enjoy panini at home as well as at delis and cafés.
How to Observe National Panini Month
Celebrate by making your favorite panini at home or ordering one from a deli or café. Use a panini press, or cook the sandwich in a heavy skillet to apply pressure as it grills. Try a new combination of bread, cheese, meats, or vegetables, and invite friends or family to create and compare their own panini.
