National Tic Tac Day
Tic Tacs are celebrated today with National Tic Tac Day! When Tic Tacs were introduced in 1969—being created by Ferrero, the Italian company behind Nutella—they were called Refreshing Mints. They were given their current name the following year, the new name being either a reference to the rattling sound their containers make when being shaken, or the sound the containers make when being opened and closed.
The original two Tic Tac flavors were Freshmint and Orange (although by some accounts Orange Tic Tacs weren't introduced until 1974). Many other flavors have been added since: some have stood the test of time while some were on the market for a period of time and then removed. The debate remains whether Tic Tacs are candy or breath mints. Beginning in 1980, the Tic Tac slogan became "The 1 1/2 Calorie Breath Mint." The slogan is no longer used, and Tic Tacs have since increased to 1.9 calories each. Tic Tacs are available in more than 100 countries. In the United States, they have a color: Orange are orange, and Wintergreen are light green. But in many countries throughout the world, the pellets are white regardless of their flavor, with the color of the containers reflecting the flavors.
