National Catfish Month

National Catfish Month, observed throughout August, celebrates U.S. farm-raised catfish and recognizes the farmers, processors, and rural communities that support the industry. The observance highlights catfish as an important agricultural product and a versatile food enjoyed at tables across the country.

Catfish farming took root in the American South during the 1960s, where the warm climate and abundant water suited freshwater ponds. U.S. farm-raised catfish are raised in ponds and fed floating grain pellets, and the industry provides employment and revenue in rural areas. In 1988, Congress designated August as National Catfish Month to honor the agricultural and economic significance of catfish farming. This month-long observance follows the establishment of National Catfish Day, which President Ronald Reagan proclaimed in 1987.
