National Spritz Day

National Spritz Day celebrates the refreshing, bubbly spritz cocktail each year on August 1. The day was created in 2023 by Jamie Knee, also known as the Petite Wine Traveler, to honor the spritz’s refreshing taste, cultural charm, and ability to bring people together. Knee’s announcement describes the occasion as an invitation to enjoy original spritz recipes and coastal-inspired drinks throughout August.

A spritz is generally a wine-based cocktail made with sparkling wine or Prosecco, a bitter or aromatic liqueur, and soda water. The Aperol Spritz is perhaps the best-known example, but variations include the Campari Spritz, Limoncello Spritz, Hugo Spritz, and Spritz Veneziano.

The drink’s history is commonly traced to 19th-century northeastern Italy. According to the traditional account, Austrian soldiers found local wines too strong and asked for them to be “splashed” with water. The German word spritz refers to that splash. Over time, soda water, bitters, liqueurs, sparkling wine, and citrus garnishes became part of the spritz family. Difford’s Guide recounts this history and identifies the Spritz al Bitter, also known as a Spritz Veneziano, as a traditional Venetian style.

How to Observe National Spritz Day

Celebrate by mixing a spritz at home or ordering one with friends. Try the classic Aperol version, experiment with a Campari, Limoncello, or Hugo Spritz, or explore the Venetian Spritz al Bitter. A simple Aperol Spritz can be made with three parts Prosecco, two parts Aperol, and one part soda water, served over ice with an orange slice. You can also choose a non-alcoholic spritz made with non-alcoholic liqueurs and wine. Enjoy responsibly, and make the day a chance to relax and share a bright, bubbly drink.
