Mead Day

Mead Day celebrates mead and the craft of making it. Observed on the first Saturday in August, it was created by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) in 2002 to increase awareness of mead and foster camaraderie among meadmakers.

Mead is a fermented drink made by combining honey, water, and yeast, and is often called “honey wine.” It can range from sweet to very dry, and makers may flavor it with fruits, flowers, herbs, spices, vegetables, or other ingredients. Mead is considered one of the world’s oldest fermented beverages, although its early origins are uncertain; one account suggests Europe or Asia.

Homebrewers and meadmakers are encouraged to invite friends and family to make mead together. The AHA’s history also notes that its annual Home Fermentation Day, introduced in August 2023, was formerly Mead Day.

How to Observe Mead Day

Celebrate by learning about mead, sampling a glass responsibly, or making a batch with friends and family. Compare meads with different flavor profiles, or explore how honey and other ingredients affect the finished drink. If you drink, do so responsibly and never drink and drive.
