National Frozen Yogurt Month celebrates frozen yogurt, a frozen dessert made from or containing yogurt. Observed throughout June, it offers an excuse to enjoy frozen yogurt in its many forms, from soft-serve swirls to cups topped with fruit, candy, or other additions.
Frozen yogurt is a relatively modern dessert. It was introduced as “Frogurt” by H.P. Hood in the early 1970s, and its popularity grew during the 1980s as frozen yogurt shops opened across the United States. TCBY opened its first shop in 1981 and helped popularize soft-serve frozen yogurt.
In 1993, TCBY declared June National Frozen Yogurt Month. The company also sponsored National Frozen Yogurt Week during the first week of June and National Frozen Yogurt Day on the first Sunday of the month, according to the International Frozen Yogurt Association. Today, the month is a chance to explore different flavors and enjoy a cool treat.
