National Greek Yogurt Day

Greek yogurt, also called strained yogurt, is celebrated and enjoyed today on National Greek Yogurt Day! Greek yogurt is a concentrated yogurt made by straining and eliminating whey and other liquids from regular yogurt, which is made by fermenting milk in tanks. Greek yogurt is thicker, creamier, tangier, and tarter than regular yogurt. It has almost double the protein as regular yogurt and has fewer carbohydrates than it. The protein supports tissue repair, maintains muscle health, and promotes satiety.

Most Greek yogurts have probiotics, with live and active cultures being used in fermentation. The probiotics promote gut health by balancing the digestive system, supporting nutrient absorption, and boosting immunity. A healthy gut may improve mood and increase energy levels, and probiotics may also reduce inflammation, enhance skin health, and slow the aging process. Greek yogurt is heart-healthy and is high in calcium, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, and has other vitamins and minerals, like vitamin B2, zinc, and selenium. It is low in sugar, having about 14% less lactose—a naturally occurring sugar—than regular yogurt. Greek yogurt may be sweetened, but more health benefits come from unsweetened Greek yogurt than sweetened.

Greek yogurt can be full fat, reduced fat, or fat-free. It's eaten plain or topped with berries, chopped nuts, chia seeds, coconut, flaxseed, and other foods. It's used to make smoothies. It's used to make sweet and savory dips, such as tzatziki sauce, and to make salad dressings. It's used as a substitute for sour cream, being put on chili or baked potatoes, or dolloped on oatmeal or pancakes. It's used in soups and curries to make them creamy. It can also be used to make frozen yogurt pops. Some leading Greek yogurt brands or brands that make Greek yogurt are Chobani, Fage, Stonyfield Farm, Voskos, and Dannon.
